Obituary for Allen Johnson

Dea. Allen Johnson, was born December 3, 1946, to the late Willie Johnson and Dorothy Owens-Johnson in Estill, SC. He was educated in the Wayne County Training School where he played football and graduated in the Class of 1967. Dea. Johnson was a loyal and dutiful member and Deacon of Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church, where he also served as a member of the Male Chorus and the Usher Board. Allen was a retired Master Sergeant of the U.S. Army where he served for (23) years. He was formerly employed with the U.S. Postal Service, was a prison guard at Coastal State Prison, a security guard at the bus station in Savannah and worked several other side jobs, along the way. Allen was a Honorary Past Potentate of Omar Temple No. 21 Shriners, a 33° member of Ezra Consistory No. 27 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, and a Past Master of Hourglass Lodge No. 113 of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia. He was united in holy matrimony to Dorothy Horton on June 9, 1970, and to this union, two children were born, Sonya and Maurice Johnson. On September 3, 2019, God saw that Dea. Johnson had grown weary of the trouble of this world, and called him from labor to reward.

Allen was preceded in death by both parents, Willie Johnson and Dorothy Owens-Johnson; two sons, Maurice Johnson and Kenneth Smith; two brothers, Jack Johnson and James Owens, Jr., and one sister, Rosa Lee Young.

Survivors include: his devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy Horton-Johnson, Savannah, Ga.; one daughter, Sonya McLeod, Savannah, Ga., and a niece that was like a daughter, Alicia Bird, of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Charles (Vanessia) Wallace, Jesup, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Leola Little, Savannah, Ga., Dorothy Weatherspoon, Jesup, Ga.; three brothers, Willie Johnson, Jr., Kissimmee, Fl., Frank Johnson, Savannah, Ga., and Booker (Martha) T. Owens, Jesup, Ga.; one aunt, Lucretia Sheilds, Jesup, Ga.; sisters in-law, Vernell Chestnut, Lawton, Ok., Cora Bernard, Miami, Fl., Christian Price and Rosaline (James) Morrison, both of Rochester, NY., Shirley Purdy, Gail Foster, Yurika Foster, Gloria January and Faye (Demetrius) Paschal, all of Jesup, Ga., and Laura Elliott of Jacksonville, Fl.; two brothers in-law, John Horton, Rochester, NY and Edward Horton of Brunswick, Ga.; his god children, Chelsea Lopez, Jesup. Ga., Chasity Rivera, Angela Darden-Rivers (Joe), Hinesville, Ga., Greg (Denise) Scott, Brunswick, Ga.; a special cousin, Laura Wilson, Savannah, Ga., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
