Obituary for Bessie Evans (Turner)

Bessie L. Turner-Evans, 72, of Jesup, Ga., passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 29, 1947, to the late, Willie Turner and Edith Riley-Turner in Homerville, Ga. She was educated in the Wayne County Training School and was a member of Greater St. James Temple in Screven, Ga., where she served as an usher and also sang in the choir. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. Bessie was a former employee at Wayne Memorial Hospital as a dietician, McDaniels Vending and worked as a private housekeeper for several families in the county. She was well loved and was a kind, genuine and loving person to everyone she met, and will be forever remembered for her loving ways.

Bessie was preceded in death by both parents, Willie and Edith Riley-Turner; her son, Calvin H. Johnson, Jr. and a sister, Ruby Taylor

She leaves to mourn her passing: a loving husband of 49 years, Joseph Evans, Jesup, Ga.; her daughter, Julia (Sylvester) Jackson, Jesup, Ga.; her grandchildren that she raised as her own, Tonya Barnes and Julisa Jones, both of Columbia, SC, Calvin (Mary) Johnson, Jesup, Ga., Martikia Hicks, Hinesville, Ga. and Kiana Johnson, Brunswick, Ga.; (8) great grandchildren; (1) great great grandchild; two brothers, Felden Dickens, Midway, Ga. and Ernest Dickens, Erie, Pa.; two god children, Demondra Curry and Henrietta Polk, Jesup, Ga.; her sisters in-law, Shirley Barnett, Atlanta, Ga., Theresa Nixon, Flint, Michigan, LeAnder Marie Howard, Cleveland, Ohio, Hortense Barnes, Anita Joyce Grayson, Stephanie Barnes, Gloria Barnes, Annette Barnes and Tina Marie Barnes, all of Erie Pa.; brothers in-law, Antonio Barnes, Cleveland, Ohio, LeAnder Barnes and Phillip Barnes, both of Erie, Pa. and Tyree Barnes of Cleveland, Ohio; her close cousin and dear friend, Minnie Ruth (Tiger) Brown, Jesup, Ga. and dear friends, Aretha Myles, Jesup, Ga. and Alice Mae Arrington and Sybil Black, both of Erie, Pa.; her adopted families, Robyn (Joe) Eubanks, Susan Vinson, Joel Green, Sr., Garrison (Anita) Landon, all of Jesup, Ga.; as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss her tremendously.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at Royal Funeral Home Chapel from 12 noon until 2 p.m.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Odum City Cemetery, Tillman St., Odum, Ga. @ 11:00 a.m.
