Obituary for Dave "Block/Big Cann" Walker

Dave Lenwood Walker (“Block/Big Cann”) entered eternal rest on April 29, 2023. He was 78 years old. Dave was born to Conyers Elizabeth (Parker) Walker and Lembrick Gabel Walker on July 19, 1944. He was baptized into the Methodist Faith at the Emory Chapel Methodist Church on March 6, 1960.

Dave attended the Wayne County Training School. He graduated on May 29, 1965. While Dave was in high school, he excelled in track and football on his school’s team. After high school, Dave went to Cincinnati, Ohio to await his admission into Central State University. Nevertheless, he was drafted into the military before entering college. Dave served in the United States Army from April 27, 1966, through April 17, 1968. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Dave resided in New York for many years before returning to Jesup after retiring as a construction journeyman. Dave enjoyed and appreciated being an intricate part of Royal Funeral Home Staff and familiarized himself with several funeral homes when he lived in New York. He was a 32nd Degree Prince Hall Mason. Dave was very familiar with many sports. The New York “Yankees” remained his favored team throughout his years; however, he adopted the Atlanta “Braves” as his team. The Los Angeles “Lakers” has been his favorite basketball team since the Magic Johnson Era. Dave had a great love for jazz music and artists, Kenny G. being one of his favorites. Dave will forever be remembered for being a man of many talents, but his ability to recall places, times and events was extraordinary. To sum Dave up in one sentence, you couldn't. He was “well spoken” individually and well rounded, meaning he could hold the most informative conversation with the best of them. Instantly, upon meeting Dave, you would see him to be well read, informative and loved life and lived his life to the fullest. One could only wish for the courage, perseverance and will to live as Dave had. He was a one-of-a-kind GUY and will surely be missed, a void in Jesup that can never be replaced.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Lembrick Gabel and Conyers Elizabeth Walker, and seven (7) siblings: Kim Elizabeth Walker, Howard Walker, Mary Elaine Cheatham, Sidney Lamar Walker, Eugene Louis Walker, Barbara Cornell Marshall and Edna Walker Scott.

Dave’s memories will be cherished by his son, Heath Johnson (Hollie) and grandsons-Zeyen Hayden Johnson and Zakai Heath Johnson, Brooklyn, New York; his sisters, Johnnie Mae Scott, Jesup, Ga and Marion Walker, Annapolis, MD, and his brothers in-law, Clamion Marshall, Cincinnati, Ohio and Gary Cheatham, Detroit Michigan; his dear and devoted friend, Patricia Lester, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 @ 11:00 a.m. at Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church, 401 W. Pine Street, Jesup, Ga. 31545.

Remains will lie in state (1) hour prior to memorial service.
