Obituary for Estella German

Estella was born on November 11, 1926, the eighth child of nine born to Garfield and Estella Floyd-Fleming in St. Marys, Ga. “Stell” as she was affectionately known by her family and close friends attended Camden County Training School where she graduated at the top of her class. She furthered her education at Albany State College with the aid of her sister who worked tirelessly to support her. Estella received her BA Degree in 1948. Upon graduating from college, she helped her sister, Margaret to further her education and then went on to study at Tuskegee Institute and Fort Valley State College.

One of her greatest loves was basketball. She played in high school and in college. It was at a basketball game between Albany State and Savannah State that the love of her life would first spot her. She met her husband to be, Deacon Harry German, Sr. in Folkston, Ga. Estella was the first girls' basketball coach for Bethune School in Folkston, Ga.

She began her teaching career in Berrien County, Ga., but after one year she decided that she wanted to be closer to her family and began working in Charlton County in 1949. She had a teaching career span that lasted for 36 1/2 years at Folkston Elementary School. She began at Bethune School for the colored and onto Charlton County High School, with emphasis in home economics. She was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1983. Estella went on to teach night school educating adults aspiring to receive their diplomas with many being military veterans.

She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and became a lifetime member at First African Baptist Church where she served faithfully as the President of the Deaconess Board, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Secretary and Treasurer of the Home Mission Society, Past Program Coordinator, Lay Speaker and organizer of the Nigerian Care Package Program. She was the past President of the Zion Missionary Department, the past 31st President of the Zion Association. Estella was the eldest in both age and membership at First African Baptist Church of St. Marys, Ga.

Some of her other civic affiliations included Past President of the Okefenokee Chapter #3312 AARP Advisory Board of the Okefenokee Technical College, Advisory Committee of the Charlton County Adult Education, Founder and President of People Concerned for Others Club (PCO). She was also a member of Camden County Chapter #191 Order of Eastern Star, William West Assembly #302, Georgia State Assembly Amman Court # 195 and a member of the of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Past Grand State Loyal Lady Ruler of Georgia Council of Deliberations.

Estella slipped away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2024 at the residence of her dedicated and loving son, Harry, Jr. in the befitting city of HUMBLE, TEXAS. She was preceded in death by both parents, Garfield and Estella Floyd-Fleming, her husband, Harry German, Sr. and her eight siblings, Etta, Garfield II, Gretha, Edward, Virginia, Willie Frank, Andrew and Margaret.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving son, Harry German, Jr., Humble, Tx.; her two devoted nieces, Linda Davis, St. Marys, Ga. and Carol Roberson, Humble, Tx.; her adopted daughter, Jacqueline Moses, Blackshear, Ga.; her godchildren, Cassandra Milton, Folkston, Ga., Regina Guinn, Atlanta, Ga., Jefferey Kitchen, Atlanta, Ga.; Special friends, Bernice Grant, Dorothy Edwards, Barbara Smiley, Marie Brunswick, Catherine Bouie, Pearl Edwards, the Pollock Family, Mr. & Mrs. Roscoe Alderman, Luther Walker and a host of other family members and communities that will miss her immensely and will forever hold her dear in their hearts.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Allison Memorial Chapel, 10141 Colerain Road, St. Marys, Ga. 31558 from 5 until 7 pm.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM at First African Baptist Church, 812 Wheeler Street, St. Marys, Ga. 31558. Rev. Gary Tyner, Officiating.

Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Marys, Ga.

In lieu of a seated repast, dinners will be prepared for carry outs.
