Obituary for Frederick "Fred" Smiley

Frederick Alonzo “Fred” Smiley, 65, was born December 9, 1957 in Ludowici, GA to the late Hamp, Sr. (1994) and Geraldine Wilson Smiley (2003). He transitioned from life on earth to heaven's reward early Sunday morning on June 25, 2023, after a short illness in Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

He embraced Christianity at an early age. While attending Vacation Bible School at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Ludowici, GA, he gave his life to Christ under the leadership of the late Rev. T. J. Lynch. He was educated in the Long County school system in Ludowici, GA, and later graduated with a certificate in Welding from Job Corps in Kentucky. In 2008, he relocated to Greenville, South Carolina and was employed with House of Raeford Farms Inc. for over 14 years until his retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed being with family, visiting the elders of the neighborhood, when he would come home, and you can always find him in front of a television watching western movies, this was his happy place.

After learning of his illness while he was in Greenville, SC, he contacted the loves of his life, his two sisters, Belinda and Brenda, and immediately the decision was made to bring him home to be with family. His nephew, Herbert Singleton, III (Tre) did not hesitate to make the journey to go and pick up his uncle and bring him home. After receiving the same diagnosis from Savannah Oncology, he was later admitted into the hospital at Memorial Health University, followed by a transfer to Pruitt Health for rehabilitation. After a short stay, he was re-admitted to Memorial Health University where the death angel visited our beloved brother, Frederick, and he entered into eternal rest early Sunday morning, June 25, 2023.

He was married to the late Inez Bennett Smiley (2010) from Darien, GA. He leaves to cherish his memory, his two devoted sisters, Belinda Smiley McLendon, Ludowici, GA and Brenda S. Brown, Hinesville, GA; three children, Andrea “Penny” Moon (Nate), Pooler, GA, Aaron Hudson, Darien, GA and Celes Smiley, Springfield, GA.; One Sister-in-Law, Julia C.
