Obituary for Gladys Rogers (Lackey)

Gladys D. Rogers, 81, of Jesup, Ga. passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born on August 22, 1939 to the late, Charley Lackey and Mattie B. Williams (Floyd) in Jesup, Ga. Gladys attended and graduated from Wayne County School System where she was part of the basketball team. She loved the sport and would always boast about how well she could play. After graduating high school, Gladys relocated to Wilmington, NC where she met and married the late, Willard Rogers, Jr., in which they divorced a few years later. She accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and attended St. John Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop A.J. Myles and joined Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.B. Sutton, Rev. Kenneth Boyd, Sr. and lastly, under the leadership of Rev. Richard Nixon. Gladys was a devoted member and she was a member of the choir. She also sponsored programs in the church that were very successful.

Her employable years were spent working at Singer (American Standard) for many years, Grogen Nursing Home, Federal International Paper Company and Herring Nursing Agency, LLC. Gladys thoroughly enjoyed her jobs working in the hospitals and nursing homes, because that meant she would have every opportunity to take care of the sick. She loved to shop for clothes, furniture and anything that seems odd or that caught her eye. One of her favorite pass times were going to yard sales and thrift shops. Gladys loved God and made it her business to serve and worship him. She was soft spoken, but she didn't mince words with anyone. If she couldn't help you, she definitely would not hurt or cause any ill will toward anyone.

Gladys was well known for her sophisticated taste and great detail in dressing. A hat was the one thing that really set her attire off. No matter what she wore, she had a hat to set it off. She was a redefined Christian and didn't mind who knew. Gladys loved to spend time reminiscing about her life and talking about the goodness of the Lord. Her faith was strong in the Lord and never wavered one bit. Gladys loved her children and grandchildren and was known by her eldest grand as "OG" (Old Grandma), that's what he called her. She worked hard all of her life to attain everything she wanted and with the help of the Lord, he made it possible.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mattie Floyd; her husband, who was a great father, Emanuel Floyd; her grandmother, Julia Jones; her aunt, Eliza (George) Deloach; five brothers, John Floyd, Apostle Herberto Floyd, Randolph Williams, Cleveland Floyd and Leander (Ora Bell) Williams.

Gladys leaves her fondest memories to her daughters, Angela (Johnnie, Jr.) Newark, NJ and Vera Rogers-Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa.; her brothers, Daniel (Bertha) Floyd, Joseph (Lucinda) Floyd, both of Brunswick, Ga.; five sisters; Mary Lee Monroe, Hyde Park, Mass., Evangelist Sadie Dodson, Hillside, NJ, Barbara (Robert) Thomas, Warner Robins, Ga., Dorothy (Danny) Stephens, Albany, Ga., Delores (Elvis) Thompson of Kileen, Tx.; two sisters in-law, Mary Floyd, Hope Mills, NC and Betty Rogers of Florida; five grandchildren, Derrick Jones, Jr., Tyeisha N. Jones-Seller and Lovee Howard, all of South Jersey, Sharif Lewis, Jr., Atlanta, Ga. and David Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa.; a bonus grandchild, John Roberts of Summit, NJ; a dear cousin, Lee Curtis Deloach; she adopted the entire Davis, Brewington, Josloff and McGraw Families; a special friend that was like a daughter, Patricia Lester, St. Marys, Ga.; a friend that was like a son, Ernest Simpson of North Carolina, as well as. a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
