Obituary for Harold Matthews Sr.

Harold Conrad Matthews, Sr., 82, of Jesup, Ga. passed away on Sunday, May 09, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Tampa, Fl. (Hillsborough County) on February 04, 1939 to the late, Telfair Houston and Queenie Mae Wright and was adopted as a child by his great aunt and uncle, Frank and Iola Matthews-Murphy. Harold was a 1958 High School Graduate of Wayne County Training School, where he served as Captain, in 1957, of the WCTS Tigers. Harold will be remembered as an outstanding football player. Soon after high school, Harold went into the U.S. Army in 1962, where his tour took him to Ft. Carson, Colorado and Ft. Huachuca in Arizona. Upon receiving a Honorable Discharge, Harold relocated back to Jesup,Ga. where he was employed as an assistant at Royal Funeral Home, Inc. for many years and ended his employment history with 32 years of service at Rayonier Pulp Mill, where he retired. Harold was a faithful member of Mt. Mariah AME Church and served as an usher. Anyone that knew Harold, knew that he prided himself as Master Landscaper. He loved working in the yard and keeping everything tidy.

Harold was preceded in death by his biological parents, Telfair and Queenie Mae Wright; his adopted parents, (his great aunt and uncle) Iola and Frank Murphy; his son, Conrad Matthews and his sister, Valeri Lashay Carter.

Those left to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 43 1/2 years, Mary (Ms. Betty) Matthews, Jesup, Ga.; his daughters, Linda Matthews-Williams, Boston, Ma., Althedia Kincey, Jesup, Ga., Stephanie Matthews, Atlanta, Ga. and Africa Matthews of Atlanta, Ga.; his sons, Harold Conrad Matthews, Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fl., Cedric Dewayne Kincey, Jesup, Ga. and Ronald Pernell Kincey, Anchorage, Alaska; his grandchildren, Breyon Kincey, Acara West, Shekara Kincey, Shonta Matthews, Quintin Jones, Christopher Johnson, Jacquelynn Matthews, Brianna Matthews, Olivia Matthews, Cecily Matthews, Isaiah Matthews and Braxton Matthews; his great grandchildren, Acayden West and Tristen Kincey; his sisters, Cheryl (Richard) Weems, Atlanta, Ga. and LaDebra Wright, Atlanta, Ga.; his brothers, Ronald (Gail) Carter, Chesapeake, Va., Farrest (Trish) Carter, Punta Gorda, Fl. and Rev. John Allison of Jesup, Ga.; as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and acquaintances.

ALL services (this includes public viewing and livestream) planned for Harold has been deemed "Private", meaning ONLY immediate Family, as in Wife, Children, Grandchildren, Great grands, Sisters, Brothers, Nieces, and Nephews. This is a request that was made by the family themselves in honoring his final wishes. We here at Royal Funeral Home ask that you kindly respect the family's wishes and request. Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Graveside services will be held @ 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Sunset Oaks Memorial Cemetery, Jesup, Ga.

Family members are asked to please wear your masks and adhere to the social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread and infecting of anyone in attendance.
