Obituary for Harry McCray Sr.
Harry Lee McCray Sr. was born on February 16, 1938 to the late, Harry McCray and Mary Lee Pearson-Thomas of Douglas, GA. Harry attended school in Coffee County, GA. He was employed as an orderly for over 15 years at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup, GA. Affectionately known as granddaddy to many students in the district, Harry retired as an attendant for the Wayne County School District where he was well known and loved. In his leisure, Harry enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Harry married the love of his life, Ernestine McCray of Savannah GA on February 17, 1960. They shared 62 wonderful years of marriage and out of this beautiful union came four children, Christine, Katherine, Shirley and Harry Jr. A father like Harry is rare, one that was so generous, compassionate and kind. Harry had a smile that would light up any room.
Harry passed away, Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is preceded in death by both parents, Harry McCray and Mary Lee Pearson-Thomas, six brothers, Homer Thomas, Buddy Thomas, Lindburg Thomas, Willie Thomas, Baby Ruth Thomas, Charlie Thomas and two sisters, Elizabeth Thomas and Eula Jones.
Harry is survived by his wife, Ernestine McCray of Savannah, GA; sister, Viola Dixon of Trenton New Jersey; three daughters, Christine Crestwell of Indianapolis, IN, Katherine Wilkins of Screven, GA and Shirley Lawson (Joseph) of Indianapolis, IN; a son, Harry Lee McCray Jr. of San Martino Di Lupari, Italy; Grandchildren: Kendrick McCray, Shameka Upshaw (Christopher), Taffaney Wilkins, Krystal Wilkins, Courtney Ashley (Jonathan), Taneesha Williams (John III), Shakeia Royster (Michael), Antoine Ellis (Kiarra), Joseph Lawson III, Dominique Clarke (Tiara), Tonya McCray, Harry McCray III (Martina), Soraya McCray; Great Grandchildren: Shamiyah McCray, Kayjasia McCray, Kenya McCray, Clyniah Baker, Cayden Baker, Alexia Wilcox, Taylor Wilcox, Ethan Ashley, Cori Ashley, John Williams IV, Jayce Williams, Terriona McCray, Trinity McCray, Tristen Jones, Evan McCray, Khloe McCray, Tommaso McCray, Zoe McCray, Tamya Clarke, Jeremiah Clarke, Alexza Clark, Addisyn Clarke, Kingston Clarke, Justin Bacon Jr., Kalani Lawson, Zakiyah Upshaw, Kaila Upshaw; sister-in-law, Mary Francis Thomas of Screven, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
A walk thru viewing will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Royal Funeral Home Chapel from 4-6 pm.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at New Bethel Life Changing Ministries, 521 Brown Street, Screven, GA 31560 @ 11 a.m., with a committal service immediately following the service in the Screven City Cemetery. Pastor David Wilkins presiding.
