Obituary for Joseph "Joe" Evans

Joseph Lee "Herbert" Evans passed away on August 26, 2022. He was born on November 9, 1946 to the late, Leonard and Dora Lee Gillespie-Evans in Laurel, Mississippi and was reared by Leander Barnes, Sr. He was a graduate of Academy High School in Erie, Pa. Upon graduating high school he attended Penn State University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. He later joined the Army in 1966, where he received a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, as well as a Purple Heart. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Military he met and was united in Holy Matrimony to Bessie Turner-Evans to whom he remained married to for 49 years, until her demise in 2020.

His employment history includes Wayneline Furniture and the Department of Transportation (DOT), from he retired after 39 years of service. In his free time "Joe" as he was affectionately known by family and close friends enjoyed watching football, with the Cleveland Browns being his favorite team. Other than trash talking, Joe enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His most memorable trip was to Disney World.

Joe was preceded in death by both parents, Leonard and Dora Evans; his loving wife, Bessie Turner-Evans; his son, Calvin Johnson and his sister, Anita Joyce Grayson.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Julia (Sylvester) Jackson, Jesup, Ga.; his grandchildren that he and Bessie raised as their own, Tonya Barnes, Hinesville, Ga., Julisa Jones, Elgin, SC, Marteka Hicks, Hinesville, Ga., Keianna Johnson, Brunswick, Ga., Calvin (Mary) Johnson, Jesup, Ga.; his great grandchildren, Ta'Mikeon Armstrong, Keyonta Woods, Ryaisia "Buddy" Dukes, Jr., I'Yonnah Jones, Jai'la Ndow, Damien Johnson, Jasmine Johnson, Lailya Porter; the great great grandchildren, Niyele Armstrong and Khayla Mobley; his adopted grandchildren, Charity Pittman, Kenya Davis, Shayanne Jackson, Arquavious Jones and Arthur Jones, Jr.; his siblings, Shirley Barnett, Theresa Nixon, both of Flint, Michigan, Leander Marie Howard, Cleveland, Ohio, Hortense (George) Barnes, Leander Barnes, Jr., Phillip Barnes, Erie, Pa, Tyree Barnes, Cleveland, Ohio, Annette (Roscoe) Carroll, Erie, Pa., Stephanie Barnes Sanders, Tina Barnes, Erie, Pa.; his brother in-law, Felton Dickens, Midway, Ga. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 02, 2022 from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. at Royal Funeral Home Chapel, 247 W. Pine Street, Jesup, Ga.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 03, 2022 @ 3:00 p.m. at Odum City Cemetery, 735 Tillman Street, Odum, Ga. 31555
