Obituary for Phyllis Wiley

Phyllis Jean Wiley was the first born of Eugene & Rita Wiley on Friday, August 18, 1950, in New York City’s Harlem Hospital.

She grew up attending neighborhood elementary and junior high schools. She then attended Central Commercial High School in midtown Manhattan where she majored in Stenography and business machines, graduating in June of 1968.

Phyllis began working for the NYC Department of Youth Services in 1969. There she held various supervisory positions until she retired 42 years later in September 2011.

However, the most important part of her life began in 1960 when her mom agreed to study the Bible with Irene Myles who often brought along Mary Robinson or Francis Lambright to assist. Recognizing the truth, the family immediately began attending meetings of Jehovah’s Witnesses with the Terrace Congregation in Harlem.

Those meetings and Phyllis’ personal study of the Bible led to her love for Jehovah, dedication, and baptism on Saturday, November 30, 1968, and 54 years of uninterrupted faithful service to Jehovah.

Phyllis loved to travel with family and friends. She attended several International Conventions and visited friends all over the country. She was always happy to enjoy an evening out at a good restaurant with family and friends. She would encourage you to enjoy whatever you desired, and she always paid the bill. Phyllis had a big heart and a generous spirit. However, she could be firm and resolute if she felt the need to do so. She loved to shop and found pleasure in generously gifting many of her finds to friends and family.

In later years, as physical limitations set in, Phyllis stayed busy in letter writing, phone witnessing and informal witnessing at the various places which she lived at in Savannah, and Jesup, Georgia.

Phyllis peacefully closed her eyes in death on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, while in Brunswick Hospital. Her dear friends, Van & Geri Pinkard, were right by her bedside. While saddened at her death, we know Phyllis is taking a short sleep until Jehovah calls to awaken her.

Phyllis leaves behind many loved ones to cherish her memories. Sisters: Patricia Morales and Ellen Gary. Nephews: Charles Dennis, Joel Dennis and his wife Michelle, Gregory Daniels and his wife Desiree, Robert Hill and his wife Vivian, David Hill, and Lee Mark Gary; Nieces: Tiffany, LaTisha and Taylor Gary; Grandnephews: Charles Jr, Raymond, Jason, Lucian, Charles, and Leo; Grandnieces: Arianna, Sela, Jasmyne, Teigen, Eden and Isabella; and a host of spiritual friends and families.

Our family sincerely thank so many loving friends who assisted Phyllis through various stages and situations in life. You helped her to continue focused on her spiritual journey to the future promised paradise where, Isaiah 33:24 foretells: “No resident will say I’m sick”.
