Obituary for Ruth "Ruthie Mae" Vail (Cobbs)

Ruth Mae Cobbs Vail, 91, of Screven, Ga., passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021, after a very brief illness. She was born on March 31, 1930, to the late Hosea, Sr. and Idella Rawls Cobbs in Screven, Ga. Ruth, who was affectionately known by family and friends as "Ruthie Mae'; was one of three siblings: Robert (Pearlie) Cobbs, Hosea (Elizabeth) Cobbs, and Sylvia (Thomas) Frazier. All three of her siblings and their loving spouses preceded her in death.

Ruthie Mae married the late, Freddie Lee Vail, Sr. on May 25, 1947 and to them were born 9 children (8 boys and 1 girl). She was preceded tn death by her husband, Freddie Lee Vail, Sr. and five of her sons: Kayosbin, Freddie, Jr., Jerome, Hosea, and Elester Vail.

A hard, passionate, worker and lover of people, Ruthie worked and retired from Wayne Memorial Hospital where her presence made a lasting impact on all that she came in contact with! She was a faithful member of First African Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Deaconess, she served on the usher board for many, many years and at the time of her passing was the Mother of the church.

She loved God with all her heart, and she loved God's people. You'd often hear her lovingly say that she loved everyone in the whole wide world, and she didn't meet a soul that she didn't have open arms (a hug) for.

Those left to cherish her beautiful memories: Her only daughter, Patricia (Samuel) Walthour, Screven, Ga., her three sons, James (Janice) Vail, Patterson, Ga., Lindsay (Catherine) Vail, Waycross, Ga. and Dea. John "Bummer" (Ellen) Vail, Screven, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Vail, Miami, FL, Helen Vail Williams, Jesup, GA, and Rebecca Vail, Boston, MA; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss her deeply.
