Obituary for William "Lil June & Willy" Saunders Jr.

William Edward Saunders, Jr., the second of three children, was born on September 26, 1956, to the late Rev. William Edward Saunders, Sr. and Eva Ann Saunders in Danville, Virginia. He was affectionately known as "Lil June." William and was quite adventurous. William attended elementary school in Danville, VA and moved to New York, where he continued his education. He later returned home to Danville. He was always searching for new and exciting things to do. One day he came home from one of his outings and stated he was going to join the Army. In disbelief, at the airport in Danville, VA, we watched him board the airplane. William had no apprehension, he was thrilled and looked as if he had found purpose. We were happy that he was happy. What a moment for us all.

Willy, as he was also affectionately known, spent several years in the Army where he received his Certificate of Achievement for outstanding performance in 2nd Battalion 6th Field, Artillery Regiment. William was also presented the first time United States Army Safety Award for Outstanding Safety Performance and he had an innate ability for mechanics. He enhanced this ability by receiving additional training while serving in the Army. He was later Honorably discharged from the Army and continued his skills in the private sector of his home in Jesup, GA.

While in the Army, William met Gail, who would become the love of his life. They were married and together have five beautiful and respectful children. Throughout the years, William worked at Farmer's Furniture, Wayne Memorial Hospital, and Duro-Med Industries (DMI). William's last job was at Walmart as an Assembler of which he greatly loved.

William passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Eva Ann Saunders, Sr, a brother, Jerome Saunders and his grandparents.

William leaves behind to mourn his passing: a beautiful wife of over 40 years, Gail Saunders; their children, William Saunders, III (Jamie), Kilra Saunders Little, Marcus Saunders, Tonya Campbell and Stresia Parker; his sister, Catherine Diane Jackson (Jack); his grandchildren, Taylor, Amilya, De'Vein, Malachi, Skky, Nicholes, and Khloe; and a host of sister in-laws, brother in-laws, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
